The Semantics of the Adjective Respective

چکیده
In (1a), respective appears to enforce a mapping on the main predication that aligns Mr. Smith with his wife and Mr. Jones with his wife, as paraphrased in (1b). Note that sentence (1c) also has this reading, in addition to one that respective appears to rule out in (1a), in which both men love both women. There is an assortment of interesting facts that any analysis of respective must be compatible with. First are the obvious commonalities with its adverbial counterpart respectively, illustrated in (2a).

Distributional semantic phrases vs. semantic distributional nonsense: Adjective modification in compositional distributional semantics
In this talk, I discuss the ability of compositional distributional semantics to model adjective modification. I present three studies that explore the degree to which semantic intuitions are grounded in the distributional representations of adjective-noun phrases, as well as provide insight into various linguistic phenomena by extracting unsupervised cues from these distributional representati...
متن کاملDemonstration of Multi Statutory of the Adjective “Just” in Modern Adjectival English Lexicon
This article concerns the general functional features of an adjective in modern English, and in particular multistate lexical item “just”, which carries different meanings in different variants of combinatorics. The authors analyze the combinations used with the adjectival lexeme item “just” and reveal the categories that determine the degree of semantic content of each given statement. The nee...
متن کاملStudying the Recursive Behaviour of Adjectival Modification with Compositional Distributional Semantics
In this study, we propose an approach to determine restrictions in adjective ordering through the use of compositional methods in distributional semantics. Specifically, we focus on being able to automatically distinguish phrases in which there is flexibility in the adjective ordering from those bound to a rigid order. We explore a number of measures extracted from the distributional representa...
متن کاملNouns are Vectors, Adjectives are Matrices: Representing Adjective-Noun Constructions in Semantic Space
We propose an approach to adjective-noun composition (AN) for corpus-based distributional semantics that, building on insights from theoretical linguistics, represents nouns as vectors and adjectives as data-induced (linear) functions (encoded as matrices) over nominal vectors. Our model significantly outperforms the rivals on the task of reconstructing AN vectors not seen in training. A small ...
